Former Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker believes David Luiz can”learn from his mistakes over the pitch”, but asserts the centre-back is”comfortable” in the Emirates Stadium, following his move from Chelsea.
The Brazilian global, 32, in their defeat in August to blame for two of the objectives of Liverpool, conceded a penalty which Mohamed Salah scored.
In addition, he pulled out of a struggle on Salah since he was on a yellow card, which resulted in the Liverpool scoring a fine solo goal in the 58th minute in the game at Anfield.
Mertesacker, who is Arsenal’s academy manager, says:”I think that he (David Luiz) will learn from his errors in the pitch, however he is very comfortable being Arsenal.
“That is what I’ve been seeing. So we’re pleased to get him.
“He brings something different from the table at this time. I think he’s in a position to learn and excel his level of becoming an Arsenal player.”
Following the Gunners’ 2-2 draw with Tottenham, Luiz admitted that the defenders of Arsenal needed to take responsibility for devoting two objectives against their North London rivals.
The former Chelsea defender has started in 3 of the Premier League matches this effort of Unai Emery’s side.
Arsenal have conceded and scored six goals following two wins, 1 draw and a defeat in the opening four matches of the Premier League year, leaving them fifth in the table.
Mertesacker considers the team’s formation and the use of Nicolas Pepe requires and the three Pierre-Emerick Aubemayang, Alexandre Lacazette more clarity when they are to give away fewer goals.
He added:”I think we have a lack of balance at this time. Ok we have excellent strikers where you really feel like but they as well should understand that we have to have a certain compactness.
“It is not just about us (lead) strikers providing an offensive threat. It’s roughly these three that are front as well, as being a device, resulting in the first frontline.
“So I believe we will need to be cautious of this. No matter how much electricity that is striking you’ve got, you will need to have a feeling of compactness .
“So it’s not just the back four that must be judged on the number of goals we concede.”
