Derby County captain Richard Keogh was ruled out until the end of the season after sustaining a serious knee injury”as a result of an alcohol-related incident”, the team has supported.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night, on which Derby explained in a statement as a”scheduled team-building dinner with employees”.
The club has promised to hold a”rigorous internal evaluation” into the actions of some of the players, while also promising to”support them using their rehabilitation back into the team and squad”.
“As a club, we can’t, and do not, condone the actions of a small band of gamers on Tuesday day,” read the official announcement.
“The players had been outside as part of a scheduled team-building supper with team and though the vast majority of them acted sensibly and abandoned around 8pm and were not involved, a little group, including the team captain Richard Keogh, lasted drinking at night.
“They ought to have known when to cease and ignored the chance to be driven home using automobiles placed from the bar, and decided to remain out.
“As a consequence of an alcohol-related incident, Richard Keogh has sustained a serious knee injury that may prevent him from playing until the close of the season.
“The players involved in the event on Tuesday evening is subject to a rigorous internal investigation under the club’s code of conduct and disciplinary processes, but over and above any punishment they receive we will be expecting them to become involved together using all the fantastic work the Community Trust will assisting the communities we all serve.
“We have been very clear about our attitude towards alcohol and the players understand that at particular and particular times of the season they’re permitted a drink together as a set at a controlled environment.
“Individuals engaged in Tuesday’s episode know they will pay a heavy price for their activities, but that we’ll encourage them using their rehabilitation back in the squad and team.
“We totally support the work of our mates at Drinkaware along with the unsanctioned actions of this little group of gamers is completely at odds the posture which both Drinkaware and Derby County Football Club take regards alcohol.
“We will be using this situation to redouble our efforts in highlighting the dangers posed by smoking.
“We’d also like to thank the emergency services to their swift help.”
