England coach Eddie Jones has warned that the typhoon could have a major disturbance in the World Cup but says he’s contingency plans in place to take care of this.
Typhoon Faxai moved northwest across the Pacific towards Japan on Saturday, threatening to make landfall near Tokyo the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
England are due to leave Japan on Sunday along with the season typhoon – packing winds of up to 180kph – is expected to reach areas of the Kanto area between late Sunday and early Monday.
Tournament organisers have planned for the chance of needing to relocate teams from their bases or perhaps to move games to various venues.
The stadiums against the USA in Kobe and Tonga in Sapporo, for the first two matches of England, have roofs and Jones says that the team will train indoors on turf if needed.
“It’s likely to impact the World Cup, there’s little doubt about it,” Jones said after his negative 37-0 win over Italy in England’s final warm-up match in Newcastle.
“You’ve just got to ride , be adaptable and work out how you can cope with the circumstance.
“After the typhoon comes, you just can’t go outdoors. It is basically a lock-down. Between being violent to mild, it may vary.
“The matter is that can’t go outside but we have got thoughts of what we do whether a typhoon ceased us coaching outdoors. We’ll train on artificial turf inside.”
Jones is preparing to get a change in states after enjoying four warm-up games on dry pitches.
Jones, with a mom and is married a woman he met while teaching in Sydney, to Hiroko Jones, is knowledgeable about the perils, having lived for periods in Japan.
Before being appointed in 2012 as head coach of the national team ahead of the 2015 Rugby World 26, he twice coached club clubs.
“South Africa played Japan [on Friday] and it was very hot and very humid,” he said. “There was lots of lost ball, it had been quite greasy, which could increase the quantity of hanging”
