SPORTS BETTING & MATCH-FIXING

Betting-related match-fixing has manifested itself as a continuing, complicated problem worldwide, transcending national borders, sporting disciplines and degrees of competition, and involving a broad assortment of celebrities, such as referees, officials, athletes and coaches. The evolution of new technology, the”hyper-globalisation” of the betting market, and ineffective regulation have been the principal drivers of this surge. The negative effect of betting-related match-fixing on the ethics of game, in addition to gambling’s links to gambling dependency and organised crime, have fuelled arguments against the legalisation of sports betting, a continuing matter. This session will analyze the sports gambling frameworks which exist, and also the job of regulatory and law enforcement entities to prevent match-fixing and organised crime linked to game.
